Grab, the leading superapp in Southeast Asia, continues its work to help ease and accelerate the adoption of cashless payments in the Philippines by partnering with tollways collection companies AutoSweep and EasyTrip. The partnership allows GrabPay users to safely reload their accounts and make contactless toll payments at major highways in Luzon.
For years, Filipino commuters have paid cash in hand at tollways to get to their destinations. However, with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, it became critical to reduce hand-to-hand transfer of cash to ensure the safety of both drivers and tollway attendants. This is where Grab comes in.
AutoSweep and EasyTrip are electronic tollway collection systems using Radio Frequency Identification (RFID). They were introduced in 2020 partly as a safety protocol for motorists due to the pandemic. EasyTrip has been one of Grab’s partners through CIS Bayad Center, Inc., since Grab rolled out its Bill Payment feature, while AutoSweep went live during the first quarter of 2021. These systems allow commuters to pass through toll gates without using a stub or paying with cash, which is safer as well as easier and faster.
The AutoSweep RFID is used by thousands of motorists going to Skyway, South Luzon Expressway (SLEX), NAIA Expressway (NAIAX), Tarlac-Pangasinan-La Union Expressway (TPLEX), Star Tollway, and the Muntinlupa-Cavite Expressway (MCX). EasyTrip RFID, on the other hand, services commuters headed to the tolls of North Luzon Expressway (NLEX), Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX), Cavite-Manila Expressway (CAVITEX), and Cavite-Laguna Expressway (CALAX). These road networks serve as the main connectors from Metro Manila to nearby provinces, and also as the main passageway for vehicles transporting agriculture, livestock and other important produce from the regions to the cities.
“Our partnership with AutoSweep and EasyTrip is one of Grab's initiatives to provide cashless payment options for Filipinos. With many livelihoods and industries relying on the transport of goods and services along the major highways in the country every day, it is important to ensure the safety and health of drivers when they pay for transport fees. We hope that providing more convenient payment methods with both AutoSweep and EasyTrip will give our motorists and their families more peace of mind, especially during these times.,” says Erwin Yamsuan, Country Lead for Grab Financial Group Philippines.
